It is with great excitement that we announce that National Park Service tall ship, Friendship of Salem, has successfully completed all necessary US Coast Guard certification and sea trails, enabling her to board commercial passengers on day sails.

Friendship’s Inaugural passenger sail will take place Labor Day Weekend, September 5th and 6th when the vessel will travel to and participate in the annual Gloucester Schooner Festival.  Tickets for this exclusive event are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. The passenger capacity is 45 persons per sail.

Important Friendship Sails Update!

Dear Friendship Passengers,

Due to Hurricane Earl the National Park Service will need to alter plans for the Inaugural Passenger Sails. The SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 4th Sail has been CANCELLED and RESCHEDULED. The SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 5th Sail remains but the departure location is changed. While highly disappointing, your safety is of the utmost concern and authorities are predicting high seas, strong winds and rough conditions resulting from the hurricane. The National Park Service and Essex Heritage are working together to provide other options as described below.

At the present time, the SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 5th sail is STILL SCHEDULED; however the DEPARTURE LOCATION IS CHANGED to Derby Wharf in Salem. Ticketed passengers need to board Friendship in Salem at 7:15 and will sail to Gloucester at 8:00AM, arriving at the US Coast Guard Station, 17 Harbor Loop at 3:00 pm.

The Saturday, September 4th sail is RESCHEDULED TO MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 6th.  Ticketed passengers will board Friendship at Gloucester Coast Guard Station by 8:15am. The ship will depart Gloucester at 9:00am; returns/docks Gloucester at 3pm (a 6 hour sail day).

Essex Heritage and the National Park Service will continue to monitor the track of the Hurricane and will make additional announcements as needed. Please contact Essex Heritage with specific questions at 978-740-0444.

An educational vessel and National Park Service emissary to the region, Friendship is a full scale replica of the original ship built in 1796.  The three-masted, square-rigged, 342-ton vessel was an “East Indiaman,” a type of merchant ship that made Salem and Newburyport leaders in trade with the Far East in the years after the American Revolution. For more information about the history of Friendship, visit the Salem Maritime National Historic Site at www.nps.gov/sama.

The Essex National Heritage Commission and National Park Service Strategic Relationship provides a dynamic platform that successfully extends the NPS mission beyond traditional park unit boundaries. Working together we are currently engaging, promoting, educating and inspiring new audiences throughout this region.
