First settled in 1635 as part of Newbury, The City of Newburyport split off to become a new town in 1764. A center for privateering during the Revolutionary War, Newburyport also become a center for abolitionism after the war, and was the birthplace of William Lloyd Garrison. Situated near the mouth of the Merrimack River, Newburyport was a fishing, shipbuilding and shipping center. Today you will find a most charming and large downtown area full of art galleries, specialty shops, historic B&B’s, restaurants, and many large and gracious Federalist homes built by the fortunes acquired by whaling and clipper ship owners living during the 19th century.
