Rocky Neck is home to one of the oldest continuously operating art colonies in the United States. Situated on a peninsula within Gloucester's working harbor, Rocky Neck is known for its exceptional geographic beauty, its unique and penetrating light, a rich cultural history and a spirited, committed, and supportive community. Notable plein air artists including Winslow Homer, Edward Hopper, Frank Duveneck, Childe Hassam, as well as Stuart Davis, Milton Avery and many others who lived and worked on Rocky Neck in the 19th and early 20th centuries inspired the Cape Ann style of American Impressionism, a critically important contribution to American art history. Dozens of working artists from painters, potters and textile designers to photographers and jewelry makers, display their work in Rocky Neck galleries during the summer months. A variety of restaurants are available to suit every taste with live entertainment enhancing the ambiance in restaurants and bars on weekends and on the first Thursday of each month, from June to September. Gloucester's Rocky Neck Cultural District offers an eclectic mixture of history and culture - a great place to stroll on a lazy summer day, to include in a day trip to the beach, or to enjoy a memorable meal.
