As an extension of the “Making the Caribbean Connection” program tying youth to local heritage, middle school-aged children in Salem served as crew aboard the Schooner Fame during a week-long summer camp. This experience, made possible with National Park Foundation funding secured by Salem Maritime National Historic Site, allowed English Language Learners to explore basic seamanship and navigation with Captain Mike Rutstein and two youth leaders.
Campers strengthened their understanding of and connection to Salem as they were immersed in its maritime culture and history. While sailing to such destinations as Beverly Harbor and Misery Island, campers learned how to tie knots, trim sails, and read charts and compasses. Youth participants will have a chance to show off their skills later this summer when they are invited to bring their families aboard Fame for a weekend sail.
