Abbot Hall - Spirit of '76, WPA Murals, Maritime & Other Exhibits

Stop in at Abbot Hall, whose corner stone was laid in 1876, the nation’s Centennial year, to see the inspiring life-size original “Spirit of ’76” painting (1876) and other aspects of Marblehead's local and national history (see below), informative displays in a Maritime History Room (20th c. ships too), and exhibits in the central hallways. WPA Murals showing highlights of the town's history from the 1600s to modern times are a priceless social and artistic heritage from the 1930s national W.P.A.

Tours of WPA Murals & Abbot Hall, M'hd's Centennial-Era Town Hall

Rotating tours (approx.20-30 min.) of Marblehead's Abbot Hall (built 1876-1877), highlighting its many W.P.A. murals on the 1st & 2nd floors, plus maritime history, and portraits of a Revolutionary War general who orchestrated the crossing of Delaware River in December 1776 (while still a colonel), a U.S. Supreme Court justice (who served 33 years, 1811-45, still the youngest ever appointed), a signer of the Declaration of Independence (and Massachusetts governor in 1810 & U.S. Vice President in 1813-14 during War of 1812), a U.S.

Historic Olmsted Subdivision Walking Tour

Take a guided walking tour of the Nationally Registered Olmsted Subdivision Historic District, designed by the proposed founder of American landscape architecture, Frederick Law Olmsted. A local architect will guide this tour, highlighting the architectural features and Olmsted's vision that make this a unique setting. In 1888 the Swampscott Land Trust purchased 130 acres of what was the Mudge Estate.

Pirate Day

Celebrate Pirate Day with a Sea Chantey concert followed by activities at the museum and library. Hear about local pirates and privateers and make your own pirate boat. (limited number of boat kits available - first come basis)

Behind-the-Scenes Tour of Salem Maritime National Historic Site

Join a National Park Ranger for a guided, behind-the-scenes tour of the non-public historic structures, places and spaces within Salem Maritime National Historic Site. Visit the bowels of the Friendship of Salem, enter the Derby Wharf Lighthouse, climb to the top of the Custom House coupola and examine the interior of the Pedrick Store House. Visit park workshops, the park library and park headquarters. Learn about how the park operates, ongoing park projects, talk with National Park Service staff and learn about plans for the upcoming 100th anniversary of the National Park Service in 2016.

Newburyport Open Streets

This event will temporarily close neighborhood streets to motor vehicles and open them for just about any activity but driving including walking, jogging, bicycling, skateboarding, even dancing! The Open Streets event is along a 1-mile stretch of neighborhood streets in the City's North End and also connects to the Clipper City Rail Trail with access to Cashman Park and the waterfront. Walkers and wheelers of all ages and abilities are invited to enjoy the car-free streets and fun activities along the way.
