SUMMARY:Newburyport's Road to Revolution\, Part III - The First Tea Party
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special Sunday afternoon tea party at the Museum of Old Newbury to explore a tea mystery. For generations\, Newburyporters claimed to have been the first to protest onerous British tariffs by destroying tea imported from British India. Before Sam Adams’s band dunked that tea in Boston harbor\, as the Clipper City’s claim goes\, a sturdy shipwright sparked the Revolution when he rallied a local band to burn the offending tea in this town’s Market Square. Join historian and educator Bill Quigley\, who has examined this long-standing narrative\, to learn the truth of this history. It’s a tale of surprising twists. \nBill Quigley teaches history and directs the Writing Center at The Governor’s Academy. He’s the author of an award-winning Civil War history\, Pure Heart: The Faith of a Father and Son in the War for a More Perfect Union (Kent State\, 2016)\, and he is working now on a book about the historically misrepresented Christiana “Riot” of 1851. He is co-president of the Museum’s board of directors. \nCLICK HERE to Purchase Tickets \nFunded\, in part\, by the Massachusetts Office of Travel & Tourism

DESCRIPTION:Boston is occupied\, Portsmouth blockaded. A wild rumor flies that Ipswich has been attacked by sea and her inhabitants killed. A British scouting party sneaks into Newburyport Harbor under the cover of night. In the face of constant threat\, Newburyport’s harbor became a safe haven for vessels of all kinds on the eve of Revolution\, thanks to an elaborate web of defenses including sunken piers\, floating batteries\, and artillery at Salisbury Point. \nJoin Graham McKay\, executive director of Lowell’s Boat Shop\, and Bethany Groff Dorau as we explore how Newburyport prevented attack by sea and became a refuge for rebels at sea. \nCLICK HERE to Purchase Tickets \nFunded\, in part\, by the Massachusetts Office of Travel & Tourism \n \n

SUMMARY:When Redcoats Marched in Marblehead
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, February 26\, 1775\, about 250 British soldiers marched through Marblehead\, sent by the royal governor to search for weapons. When that column of redcoats stalled at a drawbridge in Salem\, their commander ordered locals to let them pass. Militia companies were assembling to stop them. If that confrontation had turned violent\, it could have been the start of the Revolutionary War\, almost two months before the first shots at Lexington. \nThis talk puts that confrontation in February 1775 in the larger context of the Massachusetts Patriots’ effort to assemble a military force\, the royal governor’s attempts to stop them\, and how that stalemate eventually led to April 19. It digs below myths attached to “Leslie’s Retreat” to highlight eyewitness accounts of a day the Revolutionary War might have begun\, but didn’t. \nJ.L. Bell is the author of The Road to Concord: How Four Stolen Cannon Ignited the Revolutionary War\, as well as a book-length study for the National Park Service and many articles for the Journal of the American Revolution and other outlets. He has spoken at many historic sites and institutions in greater Boston\, Mount Vernon\, the American Revolution Institute in Washington\, and the Fraunces Tavern Museum in New York. Bell’s website\, Boston 1775\, offers daily updates of “history\, analysis\, and unabashed gossip about the start of the American Revolution.” \nCLICK HERE for in-person tickets \nCLICK HERE for ZOOM tickets \n

SUMMARY:The Revolution Ball
DESCRIPTION:The Revolution Ball is a colonial dress/black tie evening of live music\, dancing\, food\, and drinks. The event celebrates the commemoration of the 250th anniversary of Leslie’s Retreat from the Salem gun powder raid of 1775. \nIn February of 1775\, Colonel Alexander Leslie and his British regulars were sent to raid the gunpowder and cannon stores of Salem. On their way through Marblehead and Salem\, an alarm was raised and townsfolk and local militia responded in large number to impede Leslie and his soldiers. Rather than the confrontation ending in violence\, collaboration and diplomacy won the day\, thanks to local minister Rev. Thomas Barnard\, Captain John Felt\, Colonel David Mason\, and Colonel Leslie. \nThe evening’s events will begin with period drinks\, heavy hors d’oeuvres\, and music. Period dancing will commence in the ballroom\, led by Commonwealth Vintage Dancers. Local reenactors will be present\, both to take photos with and to participate in the evening’s festivities. Guests are welcome to wear either colonial costume or black tie attire. \nCLICK HERE to purchase tickets

Public are encouraged to view the interaction between the Red Coats and local militia from the designated viewing spot on the North Bridge. The actual reenactment on the North Bridge will start right at 11am. For more event information about this event CLICK HERE \n \nThe Salem Gunpower Raid of February 26th\, 1775\, known locally as “Leslie’s Retreat”\, was a significant incident leading up to the beginning of the American Revolutionary War. On Sunday\, February 26th\, 1775\, Lt. Colonel Alexander Leslie of the 64th Regiment of Foot embarked from Castle Island in Boston Harbor aboard the HMS Lively to confiscate some cannon the Salem militia had recently secured. Leslie’s orderly landing and march from Marblehead to Salem was noticed and the alarm raised. By the time he arrived in Salem\, the drawbridge across the North River to where the cannons were stashed\, had been raised. A large rabble of Salemites had formed surrounding and upon the Bridge – a tense situation only grew more excited as British troops attempted to requisition some small boats to cross the North River. \nAfter a few hours and stiff negotiation between Col. Leslie\, Captain John Felt\, Colonel Timothy Pickering and Rev. Thomas Barnard\, an agreement was met. The frequently cited account of the incident by Charles Endicott mentions\, “By the prudence and praise-worth forbearance of Colonel Leslie\, any serious collision with the troops was happily averted”. Under a lesser officer than Leslie\, it is easy to imagine the inciting incident of the Revolution starting at our North Bridge rather than Concord’s. The drawbridge would be lowered\, Col. Leslie and his troops would march 30 rods (~500 feet) into North Salem to do their search\, accomplishing their mission of searching for the guns\, before returning to their vessel in Marblehead Harbor and ultimately back to Boston. While no shots were fired that day\, the incident is historically significant on several counts and deserves our recognition and commemoration. A British magazine published April 1775 stated that “the Americans have hoisted the standard of liberty at Salem”\, clearly viewing this as an inciting incident to the anticipated conflict. \nThis event is Presented by Salem 400+ with the active support of The Leslie’s Retreat Salem Resistance.

SUMMARY:Rev250MHD: Portraits of 18th-century Marblehead People Before the Storm of Revolution
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday afternoon\, November 3rd\, at 1 pm at the Marblehead Arts Association’s King Hooper Mansion\, an illustrated talk will bring those enigmatic individuals from Marblehead’s late colonial past to life. \nIn most communities before American independence\, portraits of only a very few individuals were painted\, and even fewer survive. But\, surprisingly\, two dozen portraits of members of the Lee and Hooper families exist\, all in major museums\, along with about a dozen others from Marblehead at the town’s peak in the 1760s –– most of them by the absolute best portraitist in colonial America\, John Singleton Copley. \nIt is perplexing that while portraits of half of King Hooper’s children (as adults) were painted\, none of the offspring of Colonel Lee and his wife Martha are known. \nAmong those Hooper family portraits is a likeness by Copley acquired relatively recently (for a Copley portrait) by the Milwaukee Art Museum which has long been said to portray one of King Hooper’s four daughters. More intriguingly\, it might actually instead honor King Hooper’s second and principal wife of 28 years\, Ruth Swett\, the mother of all 11 of the “King’s” children\, who is virtually unknown and under-appreciated today. Her name is the same as the young Hooper’s first wife\, who had died at about age 20 when Robert was 23\, before they had any children. \nLooking regally serene\, on the eve of a turbulent and disastrous time for Marblehead\, this middle-aged Marblehead woman radiates subdued luxury and grace\, but also mystery –– much like the Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci. \nSoon after\, the American colonies would be forged into a new nation by eight years of war\, followed by a half decade of contention about governing laws for the new nation. The character of that divide still persists\, 250 years later. But so does the country that was born two and a half centuries ago\, on the backs of so many\, including nearly everyone in Marblehead’s thousand families at that time. \n\n\n\n\nThe presentation is part of a multi-year series of programming in Marblehead and beyond that commemorates the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution. Attendance is free\, but donations to the Arts Association are encouraged.

SUMMARY:250th Anniversary of the first MA Provincial Congress
DESCRIPTION:On October 7\, 1774\, ninety chosen representatives met at Salem in defiance of General Gage’s order. They elected John Hancock to serve as chairman. They resolved to form themselves into “a Provincial Congress…to take into consideration the dangerous and alarming situation of public affairs in this province\, and to consult and determine on such measures as they shall judge will tend to promote the true interest of his majesty\, and the peace\, welfare\, and prosperity of the province.” The establishment of the Massachusetts Provincial Congress was essentially a coup détat: a sudden\, violent\, and unlawful seizure of power. The royal government\, headed by General Gage\, was now isolated and virtually powerless except for the presence of the army and navy in Boston. \n\n\n\nWelcome and Introduction: Jonathan Lane\, Executive Director of Revolution 250 Massachusetts\n\n\nBrief lecture on the significance of Oct 7\, 1774: Alexander Cain\, author of We Stood Our Ground: Lexington in the First Year of the American Revolution\n\n\nPresentation of the Resolutions: Presentations of the federal\, state\, and local resolutions commemorating the bravery of those who met at Salem in defiance of the lawful government.\n\n\nKeynote Address: Robert A. Gross\, author of The Minutemen and their World.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe event will conclude with a brief Q& A followed by reception with light refreshments\, and a cash bar. In attendance will also be American Revolutionary War reenactors from the Danvers Alarm List Company and the Lexington Minute Men. \nCLICK HERE to register

SUMMARY:Marblehead on the Eve of Independence Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:A walking tour of downtown Marblehead focusing on the mid-1700s\, on the eve of independence\, when the gritty but thriving and prosperous international Atlantic seaport was the sixth or tenth most populous metropolis in British N. America. The town’s zealous and nearly fully rebel (Patriot) service\, both on land and at sea\, through the American Revolution’s 8 long years of war brought an economic crash that preserved much of the 18thc townscape that remains today\, including about 300 houses from before 1775 and a 1727-29 wooden town house. SUMMARY:Rebels At Sea: Privateering in the American Revolution\, by Eric Jay Dolin\, an Author Talk
DESCRIPTION:Privateers\, often seen as profiteers and pirates\, were crucial to America’s first war. Explore this little-known part of Revolutionary War history. The ragtag fleet of private vessels\, from 20-foot whaleboats to 40-cannon men-of-war\, truly revealed the new nation’s character\, its ambition and entrepreneurial ethos. Award-winning author Eric Jay Dolin will make this aspect of our early history come alive. The Danvers Historical Society’s monthly speaker series offers talks on a wide range of topics. \n  \nThis event is a part of the Trails & Sails event series\, if you would like to check out other events from this series visit our Trails & Sails Website
