DESCRIPTION:Held in Salem’s Historic Old Town Hall\, step back into Salem on the eve of the American Revolution for the anniversary of Leslie’s Retreat and Revolution 250! \nIts autumn of 1774\, Salem is the seat of the newly appointed Royal Governor\, General Gage- welcomed by some\, resented by others. With their local government severely constrained and their needs being ignored by the King and British Parliament\, what will Salem’s citizens do to get their message heard? And what new hope is this talk of liberty for the Africans enslaved by Salem merchants? \nCommissioned by Essex Heritage and performed by History Alive \nThis event is Free and open to the public!

SUMMARY:When Redcoats Marched in Marblehead
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, February 26\, 1775\, about 250 British soldiers marched through Marblehead\, sent by the royal governor to search for weapons. When that column of redcoats stalled at a drawbridge in Salem\, their commander ordered locals to let them pass. Militia companies were assembling to stop them. If that confrontation had turned violent\, it could have been the start of the Revolutionary War\, almost two months before the first shots at Lexington. \nThis talk puts that confrontation in February 1775 in the larger context of the Massachusetts Patriots’ effort to assemble a military force\, the royal governor’s attempts to stop them\, and how that stalemate eventually led to April 19. It digs below myths attached to “Leslie’s Retreat” to highlight eyewitness accounts of a day the Revolutionary War might have begun\, but didn’t. \nJ.L. Bell is the author of The Road to Concord: How Four Stolen Cannon Ignited the Revolutionary War\, as well as a book-length study for the National Park Service and many articles for the Journal of the American Revolution and other outlets. He has spoken at many historic sites and institutions in greater Boston\, Mount Vernon\, the American Revolution Institute in Washington\, and the Fraunces Tavern Museum in New York. Bell’s website\, Boston 1775\, offers daily updates of “history\, analysis\, and unabashed gossip about the start of the American Revolution.” \nCLICK HERE for in-person tickets \nCLICK HERE for ZOOM tickets \n

SUMMARY:For the Defense and Safety of the Province: Essex County Prepares for War
DESCRIPTION:****THIS EVENT IS SOLD OUT****\nJoin us for a lecture by Historian Alex Cain\, followed by drilling demonstrations performed by reenactors from Danvers & Lexington. \nIn October 1774\, the Massachusetts Provincial Congress ordered the towns across the colony to prepare for war with England. In response\, Essex County entered a wartime phase that included creating minute-man companies\, stockpiling arms\, ammunition\, and equipment\, and establishing a defense network ready to mobilize if the redcoats marched from Boston into the countryside. Join Alexander Cain as he discusses the county’s response to the British threat of war on the eve of Lexington and Concord. \n \nAfter the lecture\, attendees can stay to witness live demonstrations of the types of drills used by local militias in 1775. Reenactors from the Danvers Alarm List Company will demonstrate the Pickering Manual of Arms\, while the Lexington Minutemen will demonstrate the 1764 Crown Manual. These demonstrations will offer a hands-on look at how militias trained and prepared for battle in the years leading up to the Revolution. \nGuests are welcome to arrive at 9:00 am for some coffee and light refreshments\, the lecture will begin at 9:30am with the drilling demonstrations to follow right after. \nThe Lecture portion will be limited to 75 participants but all are welcome to attend the drill demonstrations. Please be aware that the reenactors will be firing muskets during these demonstrations\, which will result in loud booms and smoke. \nREGISTER HERE\nMeredith Farm is a privately owned\, 188-acre farm in Topsfield\, which has been recently renovated. Its 1793 Barn houses an extensive private collection of artifacts related to American history; This barn is where the lecture portion will take place. \nThis program is part of Essex County Revolution 250.Essex County Revolution 250 is an initiative of Essex Heritage in partnership with Massachusetts Rev250 and dozens of regional museums\, heritage sites\, and organizations\, with the intention of raising awareness and highlighting the diverse stories of Essex County\, Massachusetts residents\, free and unfree\, during the American Revolutionary period.

DESCRIPTION:Boston is occupied\, Portsmouth blockaded. A wild rumor flies that Ipswich has been attacked by sea and her inhabitants killed. A British scouting party sneaks into Newburyport Harbor under the cover of night. In the face of constant threat\, Newburyport’s harbor became a safe haven for vessels of all kinds on the eve of Revolution\, thanks to an elaborate web of defenses including sunken piers\, floating batteries\, and artillery at Salisbury Point. \nJoin Graham McKay\, executive director of Lowell’s Boat Shop\, and Bethany Groff Dorau as we explore how Newburyport prevented attack by sea and became a refuge for rebels at sea. \nCLICK HERE to Purchase Tickets \nFunded\, in part\, by the Massachusetts Office of Travel & Tourism \n \n

SUMMARY:Newburyport's Road to Revolution\, Part III - The First Tea Party
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special Sunday afternoon tea party at the Museum of Old Newbury to explore a tea mystery. For generations\, Newburyporters claimed to have been the first to protest onerous British tariffs by destroying tea imported from British India. Before Sam Adams’s band dunked that tea in Boston harbor\, as the Clipper City’s claim goes\, a sturdy shipwright sparked the Revolution when he rallied a local band to burn the offending tea in this town’s Market Square. Join historian and educator Bill Quigley\, who has examined this long-standing narrative\, to learn the truth of this history. It’s a tale of surprising twists. \nBill Quigley teaches history and directs the Writing Center at The Governor’s Academy. He’s the author of an award-winning Civil War history\, Pure Heart: The Faith of a Father and Son in the War for a More Perfect Union (Kent State\, 2016)\, and he is working now on a book about the historically misrepresented Christiana “Riot” of 1851. He is co-president of the Museum’s board of directors. \nCLICK HERE to Purchase Tickets \nFunded\, in part\, by the Massachusetts Office of Travel & Tourism

SUMMARY:Patriots Day Remembrance 2025
DESCRIPTION:Every year on Patriots Day\, the members of the Danvers Alarm List Company gather to honor the brave men from Danvers who made the ultimate sacrifice at the Jason Russell House on April 19th\, 1775\, by participating in a special mini-marathon. This year\, in commemoration of the 250th Anniversary of Patriots Day\, we’re expanding our programming. For the first time\, we’ll offer Trolley transportation\, allowing not only our reenactors but also members of the public to join us at each of our historic stops. Our knowledgeable reenactors will share the story of the 16 mile march made to the Battle of Menotomy and the lives of the men we lost that day. At each stop of the graves and monuments dedicated to the seven Danvers men\, we will hold a brief ceremony and a volley salute. Reenactors will also bring history to life with engaging spoken dialogue aboard the Trolleys. Be sure to stay tuned for the most up-to-date information on the schedule and Trolley registration.\n\nBelow are the stops without the exact times as we are still finalizing this. Trolleys will pick-up and drop-off at the Rebecca Nurse Homestead. There is plenty of parking available but once we leave the Homestead at 7:50am we will not be returning until 1pm\, so please keep this in mind. (We will have portable toilets available at the Nurse Homestead before departure and upon return.) \n\n\nTraining Field (Centre Street Danvers). The Village Training Field on Centre Street was given to the town by Deacon Nathaniel Ingersoll in 1709 as a training place. A marker at the Training Field stands as a memorial to the seven Danvers men who died on April 19\, 1775 in Menotomy (Arlington).\nJacobs Gravesite (Edgehill Road Peabody). Henry Jacobs was one of the Danvers men who fell on April 19. He is buried in a family cemetery. At that time\, Peabody was part of Danvers.\nOld South Burial Ground (Main Street Peabody). The South Burial Ground contains the graves of four Danvers men who died on April 19: Ebenezer Goldthwaite\, George Southwick\, Samuel Cook\, and Benjamin Daland.\nLexington Monument (Washington St. Peabody)\n\n(This stop will be the only stop with access to bathrooms until the Nurse Homestead) \n\nHutchinson Home Site Marker (Water Street Danvers). Capt. Israel Hutchinson commanded a Minute company that fought in Menotomy. Hutchinson lived in a home on Water Street in Danversport\, which is no longer standing. The bodies of the Danvers dead were brought back to this house on April 20\, 1775. A granite marker marks the location of the house.\nReuben Keniston Grave – Leach Burial Ground (Elliot Street Danvers). Ruben Keniston was a Beverly man who marched to Menotomy with Capt. Israel Hutchinson’s company. He was killed on April 19th.\nNurse Homestead Cemetery (Pine Street Danvers). SUMMARY:Vox Populi: Towns of Massachusetts and the American Revolution
DESCRIPTION:In the two and a half centuries since American Independence was declared and secured\, little attention has been spent looking into the roles of communities other than those who participated in significant events or were centers of population. Boston\, Lexington\, Concord\, & Bunker Hill play an outsized role in the public memory of the American Revolution. In this talk\, we will examine the hearts and minds of the people and communities across Massachusetts to understand why they would risk their lives\, liberties\, and fortunes for a new nation. \nJonathan Lane is a historian with the Massachusetts Historical Society and the coordinator for Revolution 250\, an organization dedicated to commemorating the American Revolutionary War. \nDoors at 6:00/Presentation at 6:30 \nCLICK HERE to purchase tickets

SUMMARY:Facing Colonel Alexander Leslie
DESCRIPTION:How\, why & where the first battle of the American Revolution could have happened at Salem’s North Bridge in February 1775 instead of in Lexington and at Concord’s North Bridge on April 19th. \nLess than two months before April 19th in 1775\, the American Revolution’s first land battle could have taken place in Marblehead and/or Salem instead of in Lexington and Concord\, in the exact same scenario. The “Salem Alarm” event that occurred in Salem on February 26th\, 1775 and later became known as “Leslie’s Retreat\,” is now quite familiar — especially after the big 250th anniversary reenactment a few weeks ago\, and several educational events about it. \nHere in Danvers on April 23rd\, an illustrated program will explore the human side of the near-miss episode\, along with its geographical and social context. \nWho was the “Leslie” of “Leslie’s Retreat” ? — Why did he and his Regular Army troops march through the crowded and volatile metropolis of Marblehead to march into Salem? — And where in Marblehead did they land? \nSocial and cultural historian Judy Anderson of Marblehead will introduce Colonel Alexander Leslie as a person\, along with a few of the other individuals who were involved — most of whom were remarkably young ! … She will also note who were NOT involved\, contrary to common assumptions and portrayals of the tense confrontation on that cold February day. … Along the way\, she will illuminate what Marblehead actually was in 1775\, as opposed to what people think it was — especially in relation to Danvers and Salem. Because in 1775\, all three were VERY different communities. \nPortrait of Lt. Colonel Alexander Leslie as a General (in 1776) by Thomas Gainsborough. Private collection in Scotland. \nDetail of a painting by J.O.J. Frost (1920s)\, depicting the landing of Colonel Leslie’s troops at a cove in Marblehead Harbor. Marblehead Museum collection. \nWe are proud to participate in Mass Cultural Council’s Card to Culture program. \nSpeaker Series typically every 3rd Wednesday\, 7pm.\nIncluding a temporary exhibit of related artifacts from the Society’s collections.\nTapley Memorial Hall 13 Page Street\, Danvers MA.\nDanvers Historical Society: 978-777-1666 or E-mail to dhs@danvershistory.org   Donations appreciated. \nLearn more here: https://www.danvershistory.org/2025/04/facing-colonel-alexander-leslie/

SUMMARY:"By the First Ship from Salem:" The Voyage of the Schooner Quero\, April 28\, 1775.
DESCRIPTION:Salem Maritime National Historic Site is telling the story of a key but lesser-known voyage across the Atlantic Ocean 250 years ago to deliver news of rebellion in Massachusetts. In April 1775\, after the Battles of Lexington and Concord\, the race was on to control the narrative of the rebellion. Leaving from Derby Wharf onboard the schooner “Quero\,” Salem patriot Captain John Derby and his crew set sail for England on April 28th\, 1775. Onboard the ship were written accounts of the battle and sworn affidavits by participants. They aimed to beat the British ship “Sukey\,” which was carrying the British military report of the battles back to England. Despite the “Sukey” leaving four days earlier\, the nimble “Quero” arrived almost two weeks before the British vessel. The written accounts from the “Quero” were delivered to London\, where they were quickly disseminated throughout England.\n\n\nTo commemorate the 250th anniversary of the voyage of the “Quero\,” Salem Maritime National Historic Site is hosting a FREE EVENT at 7 pm on Monday\, April 28\, at the Salem Armory Regional Visitor Center (2 New Liberty Street). Titled “By the First Ship from Salem: The Voyage of the Schooner Quero\,” curator Dr. Emily Murphy will highlight the historical significance of this race across the Atlantic. Living history practitioners will read the original accounts from the “Quero” and the “Sukey.” Join us as we explore the tumultuous start of the American Revolution and how the news spread in 1775.\n\n\n\n\nNo reservations are required.

SUMMARY:Newburyport’s Road to Revolution\, Part IV- Black Newburyporters
DESCRIPTION:Explore the uncomfortable truth that\, as Newburyport debated concepts of freedom and independence on the eve of Revolution\, a significant number of Americans were not free. Thousands of African Americans were enslaved\, up to 20% of the entire population of the colonies. In Newburyport\, Black voices spoke up forcefully for their liberty and equality amid the revolutionary fervor\, and helped turn the tide in Massachusetts against slavery. Some white revolutionaries bitterly characterized themselves as “slaves” of Great Britain and King George in Newburyport newspapers. “I need not point out the absurdity of your exertions for liberty\, while you have slaves in your houses\,” formerly enslaved man Caesar Sarter fired back. \nJoin a panel of noted scholars for a discussion of how Newburyport grappled with the promise and paradox of independence. \nCLICK HERE for more information and to purchase tickets \nFunded\, in part\, by the Massachusetts Office of Travel & Tourism
