CLICK HERE to learn more \nDid you know that when Arnold was still on the Patriots’ side of the Revolution\, he and his troops camped in Danvers? \nIn September 1775\, early in the American Revolutionary War\, Colonel Benedict Arnold led a force of 1\,100 Continental Army troops on an expedition from Cambridge in the Province of Massachusetts Bay to the gates of Quebec City. \nOne of the most strategic and daring exploits of the patriot cause during the revolution. Part of the troops encamped in the Town of Danvers on the night of September 14\, 1775\, on their way to Newburyport\, where they embarked for the Kennebec River\, and their famous march through the uncharted wilderness of Maine was accomplished despite formidable obstacles and excessive privations. Native Americans\, specifically the Abenaki\, played a role as scouts and guides\, and there was also hope for broader support from the Indigenous and French Canadian populations against the British. \nThis event is part of the FREE Trails & Sails event series by Essex Heritage \n

SUMMARY:Benedict Arnold in Danvers: Gathering of Troops
DESCRIPTION:On September 5\, 1775\, General Washington called for 786 volunteers from the Continental Army assembled at Cambridge. Their ambitious mission: march to the gates of Québec and capture the city. Led by Colonel Benedict Arnold\, hero of Ticonderoga\, and joined by approximately 250 Pennsylvania and Virginia riflemen\, this expedition was ordered to march from Cambridge to Newburyport\, sail to Fort Western (Augusta\, Maine)\, and then traverse rivers and portage paths through the wilderness to reach the fortress of Québec. There they would join a second army from New York to assault the city. \nOn their way to Newburyport\, a detachment of 1\,100 troops camped in Danvers on the night of September 14\, 1775. These Continental soldiers were welcomed into town by cheering crowds\, who opened their homes to the weary troops. Historically\, the encampment was located behind the modern-day Berry Tavern. \nJoin us on September 14th at 2:00 PM for a reenactment commemorating this historic gathering of troops. We will have reenactors in period clothing conduct military drills and musket firing demonstrations at the monument adjacent to the Berry Tavern\, bringing this pivotal moment in Revolutionary War history to life. \nThis event is part of the FREE Trails & Sails event series by Essex Heritage

DESCRIPTION:A walking tour of downtown Marblehead focusing on the mid-1700s\, on the eve of Revolution\, when the gritty but thriving and prosperous international Atlantic seaport was the sixth most populous metropolis in British North America. The town’s zealous and nearly fully rebel (Patriot) service in the 8-year war\, first on land and then at sea\, caused an economic crash that preserved much of the 18th c townscape seen today\, including about 300 houses from before 1775 and a significant wooden high-style Georgian municipal building constructed 1727-29. \nMeet outside the main entrance to Abbot Hall\, 188 Washington St. (restrooms in the lowest level of that building\, in the midst of the sign museum\, before the tour starts). \nThis event is part of the FREE Trails & Sails event series by Essex Heritage

DESCRIPTION:Professor Donald Hayes will be presenting on his recent research and discovery of the role Danvers militias played in the Battle of Menotomy at the time of the Battle of Lexington and Concord. Danvers lost seven men that day\, second only to Lexington itself. He will highlight what is myth about the events vs what is a documented fact. Hayes is a longtime member of the Danvers Alarm List Company\, re-enacting the Danvers Militia unit of 1775. \nSeated capacity will be limited\, and attendees will be seated on a first-come\, first-served basis. SUMMARY:FAME Sails from Marblehead!
DESCRIPTION:The Hannah\, the first ship in Washington’s fleet was launched in September 1775. To commemorate that important part of Marblehead’s history\, the Fame – very similar in size and appearance to the Hannah – will be docked at Marblehead’s State Street Landing\, 75 Front Street\, from 9:00am to 10:15am on Saturday\, September 20th\, and Sunday\, September 21st. Visitors may board the ship for free and experience an 18th century schooner. Crew and members of Glover’s Regiment will be on hand to tell the story of Hannah and answer questions. \n \nOn BOTH mornings we will offer a 90-minute sail from 10:15am-11:45am. All tickets are $50\, with proceeds to benefit the Marblehead 250 events for 2025 and 2026. CLICK HERE to purchase tickets \nPlease Note: This is a SAIL\, so the route is subject to wind and weather. We sail as far and as fast as we can based on conditions\, and our goal is always to shut off the engine and give our guests an authentic schooner experience\, but every trip is different. \nGuests have the opportunity to raise sails\, take the tiller\, learn knots\, and engage with our knowledgeable crew about Hannah’s and Fame’s interesting histories\, and learn about the many islands\, lighthouses\, forts\, and other sights of Salem Sound. DESCRIPTION:The Hannah\, the first ship in Washington’s fleet was launched in September 1775. To commemorate that important part of Marblehead’s history\, the Fame – very similar in size and appearance to the Hannah – will be docked at Marblehead’s State Street Landing\, 75 Front Street\, from 9:00am to 10:15am on Saturday\, September 20th\, and Sunday\, September 21st. Visitors may board the ship for free and experience an 18th century schooner. Crew and members of Glover’s Regiment will be on hand to tell the story of Hannah and answer questions. \n \nOn BOTH mornings we will offer a 90-minute sail from 10:15am-11:45am. All tickets are $50\, with proceeds to benefit the Marblehead 250 events for 2025 and 2026. CLICK HERE to purchase tickets \nPlease Note: This is a SAIL\, so the route is subject to wind and weather. DESCRIPTION:In Marblehead in 1775\, as rebellion against the British government mounted\, only about a dozen heads of households stayed loyal to the English Crown\, in a town of about 950 families — the sixth most populous metropolis in British North America. Why were there so few\, and what happened to them?  This illustrated (PowerPoint) talk will be presented in the home of Marblehead’s most famous Loyalist\, Robert “King” Hooper — who was actually only a moderate Tory. The program will tell his and also several other Loyalists’ compelling stories. \nThis illustrated talk will be held on the third floor of the home of Marblehead’s most famous Loyalist\, Robert “King” Hooper. Stairs to the third floor are very gradual\, with good railings. \nA Marblehead Arts Association exhibit opening will be held in the King Hooper Mansion earlier that day until 4:00 pm. The film is directed by Ken Burns\, Sarah Botstein and David Schmidt and written by Geoffrey Ward. \nEpisode Two (Monday\, November 17)\nAn Asylum for Mankind (May 1775 – July 1776)\nNew Englanders rush to surround the British Army in Boston\, but as war begins Americans find themselves sharply divided. After the Battle of Bunker’s Hill\, George Washington of Virginia arrives to command the newly created Continental Army. In July 1776\, the Continental Congress issues the Declaration of Independence\, insisting on the people’s right to resist tyranny and govern themselves. \nPaintings on Display!\nThroughout the week\, guests can explore Historic Beverly’s rotating art exhibition at The Cabot\, featuring original works that bring America’s revolutionary story to life. Drawn from Historic Beverly’s extraordinary collection of 44 paintings commissioned by Senator Henry Cabot Lodge\, 28 are featured in Ken Burns’ The American Revolution and can be viewed at Historic Beverly’s Cabot House. The remaining works\, on view during the film screening\, though not included in the film\, powerfully illuminate the depth and drama of our nation’s founding struggle.
