Marblehead\u2019s Fort Sewall was enlarged to its current footprint in 1775, as the Revolutionary War\u2019s eight long years began \u2013\u2013 though it wasn\u2019t called Fort Sewall (after Samuel Sewall of Marblehead) until about 1800. Established in 1644, Marblehead\u2019s defensive fort was renovated six different times, during six different wars. Owned and funded by the English Parliament before 1775, and by the U. S. after 1776, each renovation was overseen by two professional military engineers.<\/p>\n
