They elected John Hancock to serve as chairman. They resolved to form themselves into \u201ca Provincial Congress&#8230;to take into consideration the dangerous and alarming situation of public affairs in this province, and to consult and determine on such measures as they shall judge will tend to promote the true interest of his majesty, and the peace, welfare, and prosperity of the province.\u201d The establishment of the Massachusetts Provincial Congress was essentially a coup d\u00e9tat: a sudden, violent, and unlawful seizure of power. The royal government, headed by General Gage, was now isolated and virtually powerless except for the presence of the army and navy in Boston.<\/p>\n<div class=\"eds-l-mar-vert-6 eds-l-sm-mar-vert-4 eds-text-bm structured-content-rich-text\">\n<div class=\"eds-text--left\">\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Welcome and Introduction<\/strong>: Jonathan Lane, Executive Director of\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/www.revolution250.org\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.revolution250.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-msys-clicktrack=\"0\">Revolution 250<\/a>\u00a0Massachusetts<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Brief lecture on the significance of Oct 7, 1774<\/strong>:\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/www.historicalnerdery.com\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.historicalnerdery.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-msys-clicktrack=\"0\">Alexander Cain<\/a>, author of <em>We Stood Our Ground: Lexington in the First Year of the American\u00a0<\/em><em>Revolution<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Presentation of the Resolutions<\/strong>: Presentations of the federal, state, and local resolutions commemorating the bravery of those who met at Salem in defiance of the lawful government.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Keynote Address<\/strong>:\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/history.uconn.edu\/person\/robert-a-gross\/\" href=\"https:\/\/history.uconn.edu\/person\/robert-a-gross\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-msys-clicktrack=\"0\">Robert A. Gross<\/a>, author of\u00a0<em>The Minutemen and their World.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"eds-l-mar-vert-6 eds-l-sm-mar-vert-4 eds-text-bm structured-content-rich-text\">\n<div class=\"eds-text--left\">\n<p>The event will conclude with a brief Q&amp; A followed by reception with light refreshments, and a cash bar.
