DESCRIPTION:On December 6\, 1917\, during the height of WWI\, a massive explosion took place in Halifax Harbor in Nova Scotia\, Canada.\n\n\nOn December 6\, 1917\, during the height of WWI\, two ships trying to navigate Halifax Harbor collided resulting in the largest man-made explosion of the pre-atomic age. \nEssex Heritage President\, David Read\, will recount the events leading up to this devastating tragedy and the impressive Massachusetts rescue effort. Relive the personal stories and riveting details of the weeks that followed – and learn about the most important train to ever travel through Essex County. \nJoin us for a special presentation on about this historic day and learn why the citizens of Nova Scotia still send a special gift of appreciation each year! \nThis 1.5-hour lecture will be followed by a brief Q&A. \nTICKETS $10 Essex Heritage Members; $12 Non-Members. SUMMARY:"Journey to Juneteenth" with Storyteller Valerie Tutson
DESCRIPTION:In commemoration of the upcoming Juneteenth holiday\, Essex Heritage and the National Park Service are bringing award-winning storyteller\, Valerie Tutson\, to the Salem Armory Regional Visitor Center. Valerie will be presenting “Journey to Juneteenth”\, a 45-minute program comprised of a collection of short stories celebrating freedom. During the performance\, Tutson will recount the day that news of emancipation reached Galveston\, Texas\, through the eyes of a fictional character. Audiences will learn about the day General Granger read Order No. 3 and its impact on the fictional character’s life as an enslaved person and what happened to her and her family after. \nWe would like to thank Valerie Tutson and Arts for Learning Massachusetts for working with us. \nThe event is free to attend\, but registration is strongly encouraged as space is limited. All ages welcome. \nRegister Here.  \nPlease note: This performance will be taking place in the open atrium area of the Visitor Center\, kids will be encouraged to sit on the floor\, there will be some benches available for seating. A limited number of folding chairs may be provided upon request.
