In contrast to the extensive literature on the shipbuilding men of Essex, Massachusetts, this exhibit highlights the women of Essex and the ways that they influenced the town and the larger story of women’s history. The exhibit features over a dozen women, including
- Women whose ingenuity got the first meeting house built
- A young woman’s 19th century journal
- One of the first female auctioneers in the country
- A professional female baseball player
The exhibit will be featured at the National Park Service Visitor Center in Salem through December.
