Hundreds of local residents and dignitaries came to Saugus town hall on September 19 to celebrate the dedication of the Round Hill Historic Site. The newly restored site includes interpretive signage, granite bollards, decorative cast iron fencing, and a handicapped accessible pathway with a stone oblique in the center.
The ceremony marked nearly a decade long effort by the Saugus Historical Commission to preserve Round Hill. The conical shaped hill rises approximately 150 high, is 600 feet long and has commanding views of the meandering Saugus River and the Atlantic Ocean. Native Americans occupied the area and used the local stone to manufacture tools. The hill is featured on the Saugus Town Seal. The collaborative project was made possible by many partners who donated time, money, expertise and materials. It was awarded an Essex Heritage Partnership Grant in 2014. At the dedication, Stephen Carlson, Chairman of the Saugus Historical Commission, announced that their next project will be to develop a pathway system to make the top of Round Hill accessible to the public.
