Essex Heritage partnered with the The House of the Seven Gables, Salem Public Schools and other community organizations to create Making the Caribbean Connection -- an innovative program designed to engage Dominican-American English language learning (ELL) middle school students in exploring the untold stories, past and present, that connect their Caribbean homeland with their current home in Salem. This enrichment program allowed for rich, local resource-based learning and community engagement.
Students’ exploration of, and reactions to, the content also served as a starting point for Salem Maritime National Historic Site and other National Heritage Areas to better inform their own programming as they seek to more effectively connect with the Latino community in the region. The impacts of this successful program continue to be felt -- “lessons learned” have been captured and disseminated through Essex Heritage-sponsored teacher professional development workshops and other interactive presentations to National Park staff, teachers, and local cultural and historic sites.
