One of the ship building capitals of New England, Gloucester Massachusetts is located only 30 miles North of Boston and is accessible by car, train or boat. The English started a settlement in Gloucester by 1623 because of the abundance of codfish off the coast. Gloucester fishermen became world famous, and salted fish the town’s principal export. Today, Gloucester’s scenic beauty, active fishing industry, and renowned arts community have attracted visitors and inspired painters since the early 19th century, as they do today. The City is home to many fine waterfront restaurants, some of the world’s freshest seafood, plenty of antique shops and the world renowned Rocky Neck Art Colony, the country’s oldest artists’ colony, as well as six lighthouse and miles of trails.
