Newbury lies just south of the mouth of the Merrimack River, and is drained by the Little River and Parker River, which, along with the Plum Island River, drains into the Plum Island Sound, separating Plum Island from the mainland. Much of the town land is made of marshes, and quite a bit is protected land, including Parker River National Wildlife Refuge. First settled in 1635, Newbury was established as a cattle raising enterprise. In 1764, the part of Newbury which had become the commercial center was divided off and made Newburyport. This action relegated Newbury to a rural and fishing community, now a quiet New England town rich in heritage. Coastal Byway Miles: 8.3
