Although the City of Salem is mostly famous for witchcraft and the witch trails of 1692, there is much more history here to learn and experience! The maritime history of Salem, Massachusetts stretches back nearly four hundred years. When the United States was young, ships from Salem, Massachusetts helped to build the new nation’s economy by carrying cargo back and forth from the West to Asia. A thriving seaport, the town became a center for privateering during the American Revolution. By 1790, Salem was the sixth largest city in the country, and a center for foreign trade. Today Salem is a lively city filled with museums, restaurants, and shopping. Coastal Byway Miles: 3.2
