Nearly 350 years ago, settlers from Salem bargained with the Indians for some land known as Saugus, the place where the local Indian chiefs, the Sagamores, lived. At first, Lynn relied on family farming and shell fishing, but leather tanning soon became a major industry, until Lynn became the ladies’ shoe center of the world. By the mid-1800s, handsome summer estates were built along the Lynn shore, establishing the city as a fashionable Boston resort area. Coastal Byway Miles: 3.2
