The George Peabody Birthplace & Library celebrates the life of the well-known international merchant, financier, and benefactor of numerous philanthropies, both in the United States and in England. The Museum is dedicated to preserving George Peabody's history and his legacy of community interest. The George Peabody Birthplace & Library also officially serves as a community cultural center maintained by the City of Peabody. Adjacent to the George Peabody House Museum, The Peabody Leatherworkers Museum commemorates Peabody's history as the "Leather Capital of the World." The Museum's exhibits feature leatherworking machinery and tools, photographs, and other artifacts that document the three hundred year history of tanning in Peabody.

The George Peabody House is officially designated an Essex National Heritage Area Visitor Center. As such, in addition to giving information about the history of the Peabody vicinity, it also provides general information about the Essex National Heritage Area.
